Tax Time Reminder

In January, we introduced you to SurePayroll to help with all of your "nanny tax" needs this season. Since next week marks the IRS deadline for filing, it doesn't hurt to go over WHO you may owe taxes on -- and it's not just nannies.

According to the IRS, you must pay taxes on household employees if you paid them over $1,600 in 2008. A "household employee" is someone you've hired to work in/around your home and you control what they do for you. It doesn't matter if the employee works full-time or part-time, or whether you pay hourly, weekly, monthly, etc. All that really matters is that YOU have the right to control the details of how the work is done. (This doesn't apply to caregivers you hire through agencies, since the agency controls their work.)

So, you may owe taxes on not just your nanny, but also your babysitter, housekeeper -- possibly anyone you hired on Sittercity.com, if you paid them more than $1,600 last year.

Kid-Friendly Searching at KidRex.org

It's true: everyone loves Google. Yet, Google's regular search doesn't offer the family-friendly filter that many parents prefer. Thus, a seemingly innocent search (like "toys") can pull up some not-so-kid-friendly sites that would make any parent cringe.

Rather than stress about your child's online exposure or ban him from using search engines altogether, check out KidRex.org. Powered by Google, KidRex uses SafeSearch technology to screen for explicit content and exclude it from your child's search. It also maintains its own ongoing database of inappropriate sites and keywords, giving you even more peace of mind.

Visit KidRex.org to conduct safe, kid-friendly searches.
